Are you ready for goosebumps? High School Horror Story opens today
There’s nothing more terrifying than high school.
This year, 2018-19 Youth Play Production is focusing on the classic traditions of oral story-telling, through an emphasis on monologue work, and physical story-telling with creative movement.
To explore the oral tradition of story-telling, Theatre; Just Because is proud to present High School Horror Story. This new play is inspired by R.L. Stein’s Goosebumps franchise, and the classic 80’s film The Breakfast Club.
High School Horror Story tells the story of a group of teenagers who are partners on a science project and find themselves locked in the school after-hours on the night of a thunderstorm.

To pass the time, the youths decide to tell each other scary stories to pass the time. With each story more elaborate after the other, the youth soon discover they have more in common than they realize.
Combining campfire-style story circles along with vignette-based stories highlighted with practical effects and stagecraft, the 2018-19 Youth Play Production program offers Wood Buffalo youth a one-of-a-kind theatre education experience.
The play is being written by Theatre; Just Because Artistic Director Justin Shaw, and the “horror stories” are being developed by the youth collective based on research of the youth-based horror genre, and improv exercises.
“It has been a pleasure working with this gifted group of youngsters,” says Shaw. “Having TJ Carabeo on board again as Musical Director has been fun – it definitely adds an exciting texture to the story. And having Bailey Yarkie in the room as Assistant Director has been a total blessing – creative, driven, and incredibly helpful.”
Theatre; Just Because has also benefited from the support from the entire SECPA staff, particularly the technical support from the staff’s theatre technician Ty Andres.
This family-friendly all-ages comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences with cheers and chills!
This production is presented at the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts with funding consideration from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
The show takes place Saturday & Sunday, March 16 & 17 at 1 p.m. Tickets available online and at the Box Office.
