A Focus on Children’s Early Years

By on October 2, 2018 0 1012 Views

The Fort McMurray Early Years Coalition (EYC) is a local initiative launched in 2010 to unite voices empowering children and families within the Wood Buffalo region.

The mission of our local EYC is to “ensure healthy child development and knowledge for children, parents, caregivers, teachers and community through an adaptable and progressive child-focused network.”

Inside our inaugural edition of YMM Parent Magazine, you’ll find a 14-page handbook from the Fort McMurray’s EYC and its community partners that thoroughly explain their purpose and programs.

From the data summary on Early Development Instrument to profiles of ELCC (Early Learning and Child Care) Leaders found in the city; the supplement is robust with information on all the tools available.

Why They Matter To Us All!

In the Our Children’s Early Years introduction – found inside the handbook, it states “the optimal growth and development of young children in our society are everyone’s concern. We’re all connected and we must rely on each other, so we all have a stake in ensuring the well-being of others.”

The handbook also provides a list of ELCC Centres with information on their history and missions. The ELCC Centres include Willow Lake Tiny Tots Daycare, YMCA Birchwood Child Care, Children First: Eagle Ridge Nest and the Fort McMurray Boys & Girls Club Tiny Toes Daycare Centre.

Each of the local ELCC Centres core values pertains to:

  • Belonging: They welcome everyone in safe, accepting environments.
  • Encouragement & Support: They help every child and youth realize their full potential.
  • Working Together: They work with young people, families, volunteers, communities, partners, and government.
  • Respect: They ensure that everyone is heard, valued, and treated fairly.
  • Speaking Out: They give children, youth, and families a voice.
