Aiden Wright spent much of his time here in Canada pursuing his love for sports, representing the community in competitions and giving back to the municipality.
Born in South Africa, Aiden moved to Fort McMurray in 2012 and took the opportunity to try many new sports.
“In South Africa, the two main sports were Rugby and Cricket, so when I moved here, I wanted to try all the activities I could,” he said.
Over the years, Aiden has travelled and competed in tournaments both provincially and nationally, playing on the Zone 7 team at the 2020 Alberta Winter Games and as part of the Thunder Volleyball Club at the 2019 Volleyball Canada Nationals.
Aiden doesn’t limit himself to one sport, and he is also a member of the Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball, Cross Country and Track and Field teams at Ecole McTavish High School.
“The community has given me so much, so the least I can do is give back.” — Aiden Wright
Aiden received Varsity Rookie Athlete of the Year, Basketball and Volleyball Most Sportsmanlike Player and Volleyball All-Star at Provincial school tournaments throughout his high school career.
Aiden is grateful to his parents and aims to make them proud by achieving academic excellence, receiving the Honours with Distinction Award from grades 7 to 10. Aiden is also an avid volunteer at the Wood Buffalo Food Bank and his local church. He also hoped to promote sports to kids by running the volleyball event at the annual Mega Boyz.
“The community has given me so much, so the least I can do is give back,” he said. During the 2020 Spring Flood, which devastated many properties, Aiden stepped forth to help prevent the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre from being damaged.
Aiden hopes to get a University Scholarship for Volleyball in the future and one day plays for Team Canada. He is currently one of the top prospects in Alberta.
